Lecturer in New Media and Digital Culture

The Department of Media Studies is seeking a lecturer on a fixed-term (4-year) contract to teach New Media & Digital Culture.

Candidates should have considerable knowledge of the study of New Media & Digital Culture in the humanities, especially in the areas of digital research methods and critical internet culture. They will also have demonstrable affinity with the media arts, media history, media theory and social media critique. Up-to-date web vernacular knowledge is desirable. Practical experience in working analytically with online platforms (e.g., Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, 4chan, Telegram, TikTok) and web-based applications and tools (e.g., social media analytics) is also desirable. Critical reflection on AI platforms is also a plus.

Our lecturers are expected to be able to teach a wide range of subjects within the Bachelor’s programme in Media and Information, including courses in data journalism, media theory, digital practices, digital methods and information analytics, media history as well as contemporary themes in digital culture. Teaching duties include supervising Bachelor and Master thesis in New Media & Digital Culture.

This what you will be doing

• Under the supervision of the course coordinator, providing Bachelor's education within Media & Information and Media & Culture in the area of New Media & Digital Culture and in more general subjects of the programme.
• Coordinating practical matters around your own teaching working group (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
• Marking (final) assignments, theses and papers, providing input on tests and test questions and entering marks;
• Supervising theses and providing other individual supervision to students (mentoring, coaching and supervising internships);
• Attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and translating course materials or assignments and selecting teaching methods, in consultation with colleagues and the course coordinator;
• Teaching seminar groups, attending lectures, marking assignments and supervising theses.

This is what we ask of you

• A PhD degree in Media Studies in the humanities or related discipline;
• Pedagogical and didactic competence (able to cater to students’ starting situation, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers);
• A University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) or, if this has not been acquired, then a willingness to begin the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment and obtain the certificate within three years of employment;
• You are able to teach in English and preferably in Dutch;
• If you do not speak Dutch, we offer the opportunity to take and pass the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II;
• Team spirit and a willingness to take part in the team’s activities and to collaborate within and beyond the teaching team;
• Organisational, administrative and time-management skills.

This is what we offer you

• We offer temporary employment for a period of four years with a probationary period of two months. The preferred starting date is 01 September 2026.
• Excellent training and development opportunities, including participation in our Lecturer Development Programme and time reserved for professional development;
• Depending on relevant experience, the salary at the start of the employment is between EUR 3,546 until EUR 5,538 gross per month based on full-time employment for a 38-hour working week. In addition, you will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable;
• Attaining the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ);
• The opportunity to attain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) and/or to participate in the Dutch as a Second Language programme II.

This is where you will be working
The New Media & Digital Culture Team You will be working within an enthusiastic team of 35 academic colleagues. The team delivers teaching on the Bachelor’s programmes in Media & Information and Media & Culture and the Master’s programme in New Media & Digital Culture. You will be given considerable freedom to structure the teaching (and its organisation) in line with proven insights. Within the team, you will be offered mentoring and guidance according to your experience and needs. In addition to the professionalization as a university teacher that you will gain from this position, you can also become an affiliated member of a research school and take part in reading groups, workshops, symposia, etc.

We prepare our students for a career as a researcher or as a critical professional capable of reflecting on professional practice and on their own role within that practice.

The Department of Media Studies New Media & Digital Culture, together with five other teams, form the Department of Media Studies. It is one of the largest departments within the faculty, where PhD candidates, researchers, and academic and practice-based lecturers work closely together. Due to the department’s international character, the working language is a mix of Dutch and English.
